Sketches from hill road, 2012

In the past, my experience of sketching often accompanied the pleasure of being able to go outdoors. This kind of pleasure often overshadows the purpose of sketching, and gives my viewers a sense of joy. To me, sketching is a causal way to approach my subject. The works produced from the hills in this project can be divided into two parts – art produced from inside the moving car and also from outside the moving car. Outside the car, a device that sprays paint is installed on the hood of the car, while an artist sits inside the car to sketch the landscape. As a result, both the artist inside the car and the device outside the car become tools for creating art. As a result, art is created as the car drives through the hills. This is an example of external force leaving its marks behind and influencing the process of art. For this project, two artists (張暉明 and 蔡秉訓) were invited to sketch the landscape while the car drove through the winding roads. The purpose was not for the artists to produce the so-called landscape paintings, but to capture the art created by the drive on serpentine roads as well as the fun, the exhaustion, the surprise, the shock and anxiety, and the trance-like state that the artists are put under.
